Calhoun, David– Russell County; [affidavit] 16 Sept 1789, David Culhouon [or Calhoon] came before James Wharton JP and made oath that in 1780 Capt Day an officer appointed for the western defence impressed a steer from him, and the Indians burned his house and the certificate [that he received for the steer], and he has never received any pay (APA 238).

Campbell, John– Gloucester County; 23 Aug 1781, John Campbell, assistant to Thos. Harwood D.C. certifies that he had Mr Triggs cart, team & driver one day to cart corn for use of the army (APA 238).

Carr, William– Halifax County; On a list of blankets taken for the use of Capt McDaniel’s company when they marched with Maj Gen Greene’s army to Guilford NC, William Carr 1 blanket valued at 0.9.0 (APA 238).

Carter, Job- 13 April 1781, account of Job Carter for expences while on express from Lancaster, totaling 375.12.0 (APA 139, folder “1781”).

Carter, John– Russell County; [affidavit] 25 Sept 1789 John Carter appeared before Charles Bickley JP and made oath that in 1778 he furnished a steer for use of militia on duty, and also in 1781 he furnished 121 bushels of corn for use of the publick to John Blakemore Deputy Commissary under John Lathem, and he never receiv’d compensation (APA 238).

Carter, Richard– Halifax County; On a list of guns & blankets belonging to sundry persons which was “pressed” for use of Halifax County militia when they marched with Gen Greene’s army to Guilford NC, Richard Carter 1 smooth gun valued at 1.10.- (APA 238).

Carter, Thomas– Russell County; (1) [affidavit] 9 Oct 1789, Thomas Carter came before Andrew Cowans JP and made oath that in 1776 he furnished James Trenor Deputy Commissary under Isaac Shelby with 1260 pounds of pork and 100 pounds of flour for use of troops under command of Capt Joseph Martin stationed on frontiers of Washington County, and that he never received any satisfaction; (2) [affidavit] same date and same JP, Thomas Carter made oath that about 1777 or 78 he had two steers impressed from him for use of militia in service on frontiers of Washington County, which he has never received any compensation for (APA 238).

Cartwright, Thomas- In accounts of William Finnie, Deputy Quarter Master General, 7 Sept 1776, “paid Thoms. Cartwright for a coffin for a soldier -.12.6” (APA 245).

Cash, William–  5 March 1779, Virginia issued warrant to William Cash father of a Continental soldier by order of King George Court (Creel, Selected Virginia Revolutionary War Records, vol 3, 79, with ref. to Library of Virginia, Record Group 48, Auditor of Public Accounts, Inventory Entry 34, Daybooks: Receipts and Warrants, Auditors’ Account Volume II, 2).

Cason, James– Louisa County; 31 Oct 1780, Robt. Daniel Capt of 2nd Regt certifies that Jas. Cason brought a musket & bayonet out of the field the day of Genl. Gates’s defeat, “besides the one that was deliver’d to him by the publick and was pressd. from him and put in the publick service” (APA 238).

Clifton, Henry– Stafford County; Accounts of George Burroughs, Commissioner for Stafford, certified by him 14 Jan 1782 [includes original signatures]: To Henry Clifton for 17 days conducting waggons when collecting wheat Sept 1781 (APA 238).

Cocke, Ann- In account of William Finnie, Deputy Quarter Master General, 12 Oct 1779, “paid Ann Cocke, by Hartwell Cocke for ferriages 34.16.-“; also shown in an account dated 28 June 1777 (APA 245).

Coit, James– (1) In a booklet of Charles Lynch, Superintendent of the Lead Mines, showing accounts of cash allowed, 15 Apr 1780, “by cash pay’d James Coit for 3 mo. work” 172.-.-; (2) Receipt 20 Dec 1778, “Jams. Collier, Michael- 29 Nov 1782, Michael Colliear received 10 shillings for stableage of 6 horses and for venison for use of the militia from Hampshire County attending the Surveyor running the boundary line between Virginia and Pennsylvania (APA 139, folder “1783”)

Collins, Mary– Creel, in Selected Virginia Revolutionary War Records, vol 3, p 106 shows that on 13 May 1779 Virginia issued warrant to “Mary Collins who has three sons in Contl Army per order King Wm Court.” Creel’s reference is to Library of Virginia, Record Group 48, Auditor of Public Accounts, Inventory Entry 34, Daybooks: Receipts and Warrants, Auditors’ Account Volume II, 119.

Compton, Joseph– Montgomery County; 14 May 1782, Sgt Joseph Compton received of Samuel Ferguson 21 days provision for 1 soldier under Lt How officer of the militia in the Lower Battalion, on the frontier guard (APA 238).

Constantine, Patrick– Greenbrier County; State of Virginia to Patrick Constantine Dr. To one beef furnishd. for use of the militia in service at Donerly Fort in 1778 5.0.0, and for 1 month’s service at sd. place 1.2.6….15 Nov 1789, Wm. Poage certifies that Patrick Constantine made oath to the above account, and that he has not received satisfaction for the same (APA 238).

Cross, William- 27 Oct 1780, Col Geo. Skillern of Botetourt County certifies that William Cross was employed “by me” to ride express to carry orders to the militia officers of this county on sundry occasions which amounts to 229 miles (APA 139, folder “1781”).
