Greer, Joseph– Bedford County Court, 28 June 1779, complaint lodged against Joseph Greer that he was guilty of a breach of an “Act for the Punishment of Certain Offences,” he was found guilty of said breach and was fined 20 pounds. The statute in view, enacted in Oct 1776, provided that individuals who “by any word, open deed, or act, advisedly and willingly maintain and defend the authority, jurisdiction, or power, to the king or parliament of Great Britain” would be subject to fine or imprisonment (Creel, Bedford County Virginia Court Orders 1774-1783, 85, with reference to Order Book 6, 235; Hening, Statutes at Large, vol 9, 170-71); Bedford County Court, 29 Aug 1780, examination of Joseph Greer for “high treason,” it was the opinion of the court that he ought to be tried for the same before the General Court (Creel, 109, with ref. to Order Book 6, 295).
