Wilkes, John– Bedford County Court, 25 July 1780, Commonwealth vs John Wilks, for breach of Act “for punishment of certain offences,” he was found innocent. The statute in view, enacted in Oct 1776, provided that individuals who “by any word, open deed, or act, advisedly and willingly maintain and defend the authority, jurisdiction, or power, to the king or parliament of Great Britain” would be subject to fine or imprisonment; Bedford County Court, 29 Aug 1780, for examination of John Wilkes “for high treason,” he pleaded guilty, whereupon it was the opinion of the court that he ought to be tried for the same before the General Court. Wilkinson, Martha and Mary- Nansemond Co; At meeting of Committee of Safety 22 Nov 1775, Hunter appeared for writing letters to her mother (Katherine Leslie Hunter) and brother (John Hunter of Norfolk), giving military intelligence; she claimed the letters were for her amusement, not as intelligence; the Committee considered them letters of intelligence, and she, along with Mary and Martha Wilkinson (who assisted her) were to be looked on as enemies to America. Wylie, John- Montgomery County; 7 Sept 1779, Robert Alford brought before the county court, “and it appearing from the Testimony of Alexander Wylie that the sd. Alford was employ’d by John Griffeth to convey Intelligence from him to a certain John Wylie of this County, ordered that the Sheriff of this County take the sd.
