Doones, John– or Dones, Montgomery County; 20 April 1779 whereas John Dones “a person of evil fame, has been this day brought before me Wm. Preston a Justice for sd. county being charged by Nickolas Salles a recruit for the Continental Army for wanting and requesting the said Nickolas to quit the service in which he is engaged and to enter into the service of the King of great Britain for which he should have two shillings and seven pence sterling per day from the day he would engage, that he the said Dones was to go last Saturday to a certain place where a club was to meet to consult matters & that he would give him an answer on Sunday & that they had a Justice appointed amongst them, all which the sd. Salles made oath to in presence of sd. Dones who did not attempt to disprove thereove, and whereas the sd. John upon many occasions, has called the good subjects of the state rebels to their King & declared himself a true subject of King George of great Britain and drank his health,” these are to command the Sheriff to receive said Dones and keep him under a good guard, “as he is an old offender,” and Mr Thompson Sayers is to be summoned as a witness, along with Mathias Keen (LVA, Montgomery County Commonwealth Causes, barcode 1048926).

Doss, Azariah– Bedford County Court, 28 June 1779, complaint lodged against Azariah Doss & James Ayres on suspicion of a breach of an “Act for the punishment of certain offences,” the court proceeded to examination of witnesses and heard Doss & Ayres in their own defense, whereof the court found them to have committed a breach of said Act and Doss was fined 50 pounds and sentenced to imprisonment three months. The statute in view, enacted in Oct 1776, provided that individuals who “by any word, open deed, or act, advisedly and willingly maintain and defend the authority, jurisdiction, or power, to the king or parliament of Great Britain” would be subject to fine or imprisonment (Creel, Bedford County Virginia Court Orders 1774-1783, 84, with reference to Order Book 6, 234-5; Hening, Statutes at Large, vol 9, 170-71).

Douglas, Rodham– [1] Ordered the Sheriff summon Robert Stott, John Lewis, John Keate, Thomas Cralle, Jeremiah Lewis, Rodham Douglas, George Brown Junr. and Luke Headley to appear at next court to shew in what manner they obtained certificats of their having taken the oath of allegiance to this state, having refused to take it in their own county (Richmond County Order Bk 18, 31); [2] Robert Stott and others inhabitants of this county being summon’d to shew in what manner they obtained their certificates of having taken the oath of allegiance produced a writing from under the hand of Thomas Crallie a Majestrate of the County of Northumberland which writing is by the court ordered to be preserved among the papers in the Clerk’s Office of this county (Richmond County Order Bk 18, 35).

Dow, John- Spotsylvania Co-11 Dec 1775, brought before Fielding Lewis and Chas Dick upon a charge of attempting to persuade some of the regulars in his company to leave the service and repair to Lord Dunmore, he was adjudged guilty and sent for trial by the Committee of Safety in Williamsburg.
