Harden, Electious– Bedford County Court 25 July 1780, Commonwealth vs. Electious Harden, for a breach of the Act “for punishing certain crimes,” he was apparently found guilty, but was not fined and was not sentenced to any imprisonment. The statute in view, enacted in Oct 1776, provided that individuals who “by any word, open deed, or act, advisedly and willingly maintain and defend the authority, jurisdiction, or power, to the king or parliament of Great Britain” would be subject to fine or imprisonment (Creel, Bedford County Virginia Court Orders 1774-1783, 107, with reference to Order Book 6, 289; Hening, Statutes at Large, vol 9, 170-71).

Hopkins, Joshua- Princess Anne Co, Lynhaven Par; Convicted of treason at a session of the General Court sitting 15 June 1782, sentenced to hang 19 July 1782. The House of Delegates, on 18 June 1782, resolved that he was a proper object of mercy and “pardoned” him for said treason, provided that he move to Augusta Co and live there for the remainder of his life. The Senate rejected the resolution of the House, and the case was referred to the Supreme Court of Appeals, which also rejected the House resolution. [GENCOURT1; SUPREME1:20-22]
