Stewart, John– Greenbrier County; (1) 1 Nov 1789, John “Stuart” came before Wm. Craig and Samuel Price, Justices of the Peace, and made oath that he had obtained receipts from officers for the use of the troops on expedition against the Indians commanded by Gen. Hand and that he put the sd. recets. in the hands of Col Samp. Mathews to have settled, who sent them to Philadelphia where he understood they were lodged in the hands of one James Finley & that he never since heard of them nor has received any satisfaction for them…officers mentioned include Lt William Renick and Capt John Henderson; (2) John Stuart came before Thomas Edgar JP and made oath that he received orders from Col William Fleming of Botetourt County in 1776 to take a draught from the militia and erect a garrison for the security of the inhabitants on the frontiers, and that he believes he was 3 months completing the same, and that he for his service never received any satisfaction (Library of Virginia, Record Group 48, Auditor of Public Accounts, Inventory Entry 238, “General Claims Approved,” arranged by county).

Still, Mary– Creel, in Selected Virginia Revolutionary War Records, vol 3, p 86 shows that on 20 Mar 1779 Chas. Patteson was issued warrant by Virginia for Mary Still (2o pounds), Mary Day (60 pounds), Mary Bond (30 pounds), Sarah McManaway (20 pounds), “widows & mothers of several soldiers in the Continental Army allowed by order Buckingham Court.” Creel’s reference is to Library of Virginia, Record Group 48, Auditor of Public Accounts, Inventory Entry 34, Daybooks: Receipts and Warrants, Auditors’ Account Volume II, 27.
