Caesar- In accounts of William Finnie, Deputy Quarter Master General, 31 Dec 1778, paid John Fenton “for hire of negro Ceasar 2.2.6” (APA 245).

Caesar- belonging to Walter Gwynn of Gloucester Co; Pilot of a tender with orders to carry her to Norfolk, but he ran the vessel aground, he was referred to the Committee of Safety to be dealt with as they think proper. [SCRIB5:178-9]

Cato- Belonging to Stephen Tankard; was at Great Bridge under Lord Dunmore, taken prisoner. [SCRIB5:423]

Cato– At a Halifax County Court held for July 1783, “On the complaint of James Farrar alias Cato against the executors of Richard Daniel, deceas’d also his heir at law, it is order’d that they be each summon’d to appear at the next court then and there to shew cause why they keep and hold the said Complainant as a slave” (Creel, Halifax County Virginia Court Orders 1774-1783, 307, with reference to Halifax County Plea Book 10, 381).

Guy- certificate, 7 Dec 1781, at a Court of Oyer & Terminer for Fairfax County, Guy a negroe man slave belonging to His Excellency General Washington being this day condemned for felony is valued at 120 pounds. Lund Washington directs the sum to be paid to the Sheriff. The Sheriff certified that the said Guy was executed about 10 days after trial (APA 138, file 1788-1789).

Hercules– Virginia issued warrant 23 Feb 1780 to “Jno. Clark Esqr. who purchas’d a negro man Jacob of Hancock Jacobs, to say what time he has serv’d at the Lead Mines, this is to certify that the sd. negro has been five years at the Lead Mines”; (2) On an Aug 1779 “list of the negroes at the Lead Mines,” shown as “able & fit for labor when well” (APA 661). Luke– (1) Two men of this name on an Aug 1779 “list of the negroes at the Lead Mines,” both shown as “run away”; (2) 2 Nov 1779, Robert Elam certifies that “there is a negro man commited to joal of Chesterfield who says his name is Luke and that he was purchesed by Mr Duncan Rose from John Kendal of the Est. [Eastern] Shore and was sent out to the lead mines in Fincastle County in the cuntry’s service” (APA 661).

Marcia- In accounts of William Finnie, Deputy Quarter Master General, 15 April 1778, “paid negro Marcia, for making bags 2.11.-” (APA 245).

Matthew- At a court of oyer and terminer held in James City County 18 Dec 1780, the Attorney for the Commonwealth exhibited an information against Matthew a negro man slave the property of Benjamin Bryan for burglary to which he pleaded not guilty, whereupon witnesses were sworn and the prisoner heard in his own defence, in consideration whereof it is the opinion of the court that he is guilty and that he be hanged by the neck until he be dead on Friday 29 Dec. The court valued him to 6000 pounds (APA 139, folder “1783”).

Phebe- Certificate 10 Feb 1778; John Farquharson certified that Eliza. Weatherford attended Pheby a negro woman in child birth late the property of Mr Sprowell now imployed in the publick gardens of this state (APA 139, folder “1776-1780”).

Poll– Virginia issued warrant 6 Dec 1779 “to John Bobbitt for Poll a negro condemned and executed for murder by order of Do. Sam- Belonging to the estate of Richard Hutchings decd. of Lancaster Co, having been taken up in Chesapeake Bay going to the enemies of the state, being brought before court, ordered conveyed to jail. [LANC 15:427B]

Sam– Essex County; 25 June 1781 account of persons employed in driving beef cattle shows “Dunn’s Sam” drove 5 days…from the context of the record, “Dunn” probably refers to Thomas Dunn (APA 238).

Tom– The following are entries for “Tom” who was a slave in the Lead Mines. Whether or not they are all the same individual is not entirely clear. (1) 8 May 1783, Charles Lynch certifies that Tom, belonging to Mrs. Jones, was delivered to the Lead Mines in May 1776 “out of the publick gaol”; (2) 20 March 1775 Dr. The State of Virginia to Mary Jones, “To hire of two negroes Tom & Roger one year,” plus additional accounts for 1776 through 1778; (3)  On an Aug 1779 “list of the negroes at the Lead Mines,” shown as “able & fit for labor when well” (APA 661).
